Tokyo Cherry Blossom Photoshoots Everything You Need to Know About
Tokyo Cherry blossom Photoshoots. One of the most beautiful times of year in Tokyo is when the Cherry Blossoms bloom. Their beautiful flowers of pastel colors truly let you know that Spring is in the air – and it makes for beautiful couple or family photos. If you’re in the area during Spring, you don’t want to miss out on this opportunity for some beautiful photos! Here’s everything you need to know and how you can prepare for your Cherry Blossom Photoshoot.
When Should You Schedule a Cherry Blossom Photoshoot?
Early Blooms
If you’re going to be in or around Tokyo in the middle of February, you can still have a beautiful Cherry Blossom photoshoot on a crisp day. At this time, you’ll find trees like the Kanhizakura, Kanzakura and Kawazuzakura blooming flowers ranging in color from deep pink to light pink.
Location
Ebara Shrine, Yoyogi Park and Sumida Park.
Regular Blooms
Regular blooming happens around middle or late March. The trees you’ll see blooming at this time are the Yoshino, Yamazakua, and the Weeping Tree. These trees feature stunning white flowers. The forecast is often based on these blooming trees!
Locations
Chidorigaduchi, Futakotamagawa river bank and Koishikawa Botanical Garden
Late Blooms
While the peak season lasts a limited time, there’s still a chance to capture your beautiful portraits with the late Cherry Blossom blooms. These blooms happen in April! The trees blooming at this time include the Ichiyo and Kazan. The trees and blooms look more like a pompom. The colors of these blooms vary from dark pink to light pink.
Locations
Imperial Palace East Garden and surroundings at Chiyoda, Yasukuni Shrine at Chiyoda, and Jindai Botanical Garden.

Best Time of Day for a Photoshoot
With most outdoor photography, avoiding harsh sunlight that happens at midday will help create beautiful photos. My preferred time for shoots is during “golden hour,” or about one hour before sunset. The deep gold color of the sun compliments the pastels of the trees nicely and creates a beautiful glow on your face. Other popular times include early in the morning or on a cloudy day to create a nostalgic, beautiful portrait.
What to Wear to a Cherry Blossom Photoshoot
The most important thing to wear to a photoshoot: something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. If you’re dressed in something that isn’t close to your natural style, then you’ll probably feel out of your element!
If you’re looking for more specific recommendations to best compliment the scenery of the blossoms, then here are a few tips I normally give my clients:
- Avoid big logos
- Avoid large, distracting prints
- Simple clothes tend to be less distracting
- Feminine and flowy dresses look great with blossoms
- Balance dark accents with lighter colors
- Neutrals and pastels are typically a good choice
